"I recently began work on a table commission, one which the client wanted to blend with another table purchased from me, only larger. She is familiar with my non-functional work and mentioned her fondness for the natural materials which produce varied textural surfaces. As tables are traditionally flat, and I produce mine in a method known as double indirect (this allows me to use a wide range of materials, regardless of thickness, with the results still flat), the idea of incorporating textural elements, particularly in a larger format, presented a new challenge. I decided to produce a mini-version of the piece, a sample of sorts. The exercise was a good one, as I worked through issues that would have proven troublesome otherwise. I was very pleased with the aesthetic result of the sample, and I realized that my functional work is actually no different from my non-functional (wall and sculptural pieces), only you can actually use them. This sample, which may at some point be added to a table base, is currently seated on my mantle, just as any other two-dimensional piece might rest." May, 2008

I define "Functional & Decorative" as that work which is "usable", i.e. a vase, a piece of furniture, or a decorative element for the garden. Some of the work is sculpted or assembled from scratch, i.e. garden benches are cast in concrete, or I may design and fabricate the base of a frame or mirror prior to applying the tesserae. Other pieces may begin with a found object, onto which the decorative surface is applied. In any event, most of the work in this area of my website is considered ornamentation, objects which may or may not have functionality, but all of which contribute to the aesthetics of an interior or exterior landscape.
Following are recent works, some of which may be available.
I am always delighted to design and create pieces specifically for a client's environment and welcome questions. I am most easily contacted by email, Virginia@Charlottesville.net.

| SEAT OF HARMONY, installed at C'ville Arts on the pedestrian mall in downtown Charlottesville, December 2007
This piece was sculpted from polystyrene and finished with a mosaic of glass and ceramic materials.
During the second half of 2008 and the first few months of 2009, I will be producing a body of small and large works for the garden environment, which will open to the public May 2009. The work will be exhibited at C'ville Arts in downtown Charlottesville and at my studio and gardens in Earlysville, Virginia, with a weekend tour date TBA. Please let me know if you would like to receive notification of these events. |
